K-9 Nose Work--Fun for Jack and Allie

We have now completed four weeks of K-9 Nose Work.  We are beginning to see the direction this activity can take us.  Jack and Allie are attending the class with me as well as OhOh with Karen and Will.  It is clear this is an activity for all age dogs.  It's fascinating to see the dogs problem solve and what amazing noses they have.  Dogs have 150-300 million scent receptors while we have only 5 million.  No wonder dogs are so fascinated with the smells in the yard every morning!  This week at class we had our first experience with not knowing where the scent was located.  That requires really reading your dog and each one was different!  This dog activity was only begun in 2006 but there seems to be a lot of interest as it really encourages dogs to use their natural hunting and scenting abilities.  Now I can understand how dogs can learn to be drug sniffing or termite sniffing or whatever sniffing working dogs.  Hope we can continue this fun activity as the dogs love it!
